Philia — The Friendship

φιλία

Philia is the love between equals — the one Aristotle rated most highly, and the one modern couples research keeps quietly confirming.

What Philia actually means

Philia is the affection of genuine friendship: loyalty, shared values, enjoying someone's company for its own sake. Aristotle considered it the highest form of love precisely because it is not transactional — you are not using the other person to get something. In romance it is the layer underneath the romance.

How it shows up in you

You want to be liked, not just wanted. The relationship you are actually looking for is the one where you are each other's favourite company, where the inside jokes outnumber the arguments and nothing has to be performed. You are suspicious of chemistry that cannot survive a boring afternoon, and you are right to be.

Why it's a strength

This is the single best predictor we have. Relationship researchers have found for decades that couples who genuinely like each other — who maintain what Gottman called deep friendship — weather conflict far better than couples who are merely attracted. Philia is what is left when the novelty is gone, which is most of a long relationship.

The watch-out

You can end up in the friend zone of your own relationship. Comfortable, close, and never quite said out loud. Philia is so pleasant that it can become a place to hide from the more exposed business of wanting someone and telling them. At some point somebody has to be brave first, and it might have to be you.

What balances it

Eros — the spark. Eros supplies the charge Philia is too polite to ask for. Friendship plus desire is the combination most people are actually describing when they say they want a best friend they are also attracted to. Read about Eros →
